Math Games to Play!
- Print or make the game "Bump" to practice matching numerals with quantities 1 to 12. You will need 2 dice and 10 counters (2 different colours) that can be stacked on top of each other (we use unifix cubes at school, but you could use Lego, checkers, poker chips, etc.).
- Splat! Math game: you can play this game with 10 buttons (or similar small items) and a "blob" shaped piece of paper to make a "splat". One player hides their eyes, and the other player decides how many buttons to hide under the "splat," leaving the rest of the buttons visible. When ready, the first person guesses how many buttons are hiding. This is a great game for working on number facts to 10 while having fun! You can also play this game on the website if you prefer.
- Play a board or card game! Lots of games are great for math, including Connect 4, Sorry, Checkers, Go Fish, War and Cribbage. Maybe you can learn a new game as a family!
- Math for Love has lots of ideas for math games for families to play with items you probably already have at home. I also recommend the card game "Tiny Polka Dot" (ages 3-8), which we use in our class to play games like Memory and Go Fish.
- There are lots of math activities for Kindergarten on Youcubed.org.
- You can try some of the grade 1 games on Math Playground - lots of fun online games to try on this site for numbers, measurement, geometry, etc.
- BC teacher, Carole Fullerton has a free math resource for families with primary children to use at home, as well as lots of math games on her website.
